The production process of using molding machines in foundries

The production process of using automatic molding machines in foundries mainly includes the following steps:

1. Mold Preparation

Based on the design requirements of the castings, the corresponding molds are created or prepared. The mold design must ensure the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the castings. Molds are typically made of metal or resin materials, capable of withstanding high temperatures and pressures.

2. Sand Treatment

Molding sand is a key material used in the casting process to create sand molds. It is usually composed of quartz sand, binders (such as clay or resin), and additives. The sand must be mixed to ensure it has good fluidity, strength, and permeability to meet the requirements of molding and pouring.

3. Automatic Molding

The automatic molding machine is the core equipment in casting production. It automatically fills the mold with sand and compacts it to form the sand mold. The machine is typically equipped with vibration, compaction, and flipping devices to ensure the compactness and uniformity of the sand mold. Depending on the process requirements, the machine can produce upper and lower sand molds or complete sand molds.

4. Mold Removal and Closing

After the sand mold solidifies in the mold, the automatic molding machine removes it. The removal process must be carefully executed to avoid damaging the sand mold. Subsequently, the upper and lower sand molds are closed to form a complete cavity. Precision alignment is crucial during closing to prevent misalignment or dimensional deviations in the castings.

5. Pouring

Molten metal is poured into the cavity through a gating system. The pouring process requires controlling the temperature and flow rate of the metal to ensure it fills the cavity and vents gases. The gating system typically includes a pouring cup, sprue, runner, and ingate to guide the metal smoothly into the cavity.

6. Cooling and Mold Opening

After the casting cools to a certain temperature in the sand mold, the mold is opened to remove the casting. The cooling time depends on the material, size, and shape of the casting. After opening, the casting undergoes initial cleaning to remove excess sand and gating systems.

7. Post-Processing

Post-processing of the casting includes cleaning, grinding, heat treatment, and surface treatment. Cleaning removes residual sand and oxide scales from the casting surface; grinding smooths the surface and edges; heat treatment improves the mechanical properties of the casting; and surface treatment (such as painting or coating) enhances corrosion resistance and appearance.

8. Quality Inspection

After production, the castings undergo rigorous quality inspections. Inspection items include dimensional accuracy, surface quality, internal defects (such as porosity or shrinkage), and mechanical properties (such as strength and hardness). Common inspection methods include visual inspection, dimensional measurement, ultrasonic testing, and X-ray inspection.

The application of automatic molding machines significantly improves the production efficiency and product quality of foundries. By automating operations, manual intervention is reduced, minimizing human errors and enabling large-scale, high-precision casting production. Additionally, automatic molding machines can adapt to the production needs of complex castings, providing strong support for technological advancement and industrial upgrading in the foundry industry.
